Visit Darmstadt, world famous for the Mathildenhöhe, site of the legendary Artists’ Colony founded by Ernst Ludwig, Grand Duke of HessenDarmstadt and brother-in-law to the last Emperor of Russia, Nicholas II. The purpose of the Jugendstil artists in Darmstadt was to revolutionize architecture and interior design, to create a modern living culture.
Bad Nauheim, close to Darmstadt, belonged to the Grand Duchy of Hessen-Darmstadt as well. Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig again, with his high appreciation for art, gave the approval for the construction of new bathhouses. Even before then, Bad Nauheim was an internationally renowned spa due to its healing salt waters.
Nancy witnessed a new dynamism in the field of decorative arts and became one of the most important places of Art Nouveau in France, second only to Paris. An alliance of artists and industrialists gathered in 1901 under the name “Ecole de Nancy”. Plants were the main source of their inspiration.
